poverty and love - from a statement by J. Roth - a Mariaserena Peterlin

"Some people seem to be of value only because they are poor, and one died of hunger is likely to give a creative capacity, which in fact it is pure misery. The great injustice of world forces us to give to the poor also deserve, and already own poverty would be reason enough for us to love those who are affected. "(Joseph Roth, Perlefter - Story of a Borghese in Strawberries Adelphi, 2010)

is not always correct to extrapolate a quote from a book. However, sometimes it happens that a writer we propose a general statement in a complex story in which the framework and the characters are archetypes that we can still meet every day even if each in itself is brilliantly described.
The phrase is taken from a Joseph Roth novel, which according to the author's intention was to be the most beautiful he had ever written, but which remained unpublished and was recently published by Adelphi.
reflection on poverty, and how it is perceived by those who are not or do not feel poor, is really powerful and disarming and often shows a truth that we observe around us. We tend to love a poor man "who deserves it" or to whom we can attribute a talent, a special quality. This happens not only to poverty due to lack of resources, but also for poverty or spiritual wisdom and reason (commonly understood). It is therefore inclined to seek a justification of that poverty which, we think, does not concern us. No, we're not so poor! But the guy (or that such) despite being poor has its merits (and skills, and virtuous, talented, knows how to present, he is capable).
And because of that respect that we acknowledge can be loved: "while already poverty alone is reason enough to make us love those who are affected. (Joseph Roth).
